This Flash concert compiled by the opera company, Miroirs Étendus, used George Benjamin’s Piano Figures as the central piece from which ensued a programme of works that mirror the first. George Benjamin’s intricately textured piece explores the sound of the piano through a blend of classical and modern music. Britten’s works are both personal and intimate. The same idea of modernity is found in Ligeti’s Sonata for cello and the rich textures of his Étude Cordes à vide for piano. Lastly, in the Trois chansons de Bilitis, Debussy uses the melody to suggest duality in Bilitis, a young girl who has reached the crossroads between innocence and seduction.
