Mahler’s Fifth Symphony is a tale of revival. Suffering from significant ill health in 1901, the Austrian composer had a hut built for himself on the shores of Lake Wörth where he sketched the outline of a new symphony. But his encounter with Alma, whom he would marry a year later, radically transformed the composition, making it into a great romantic symphony construed as a proclamation of love. With Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.18 in the first half – interpreted by Jonathan Fournel, winner of the First Prize at the 2021 Queen Elizabeth Competition – the National Youth Orchestra of France and its conductor, Michael Schønwandt promise a concert filled with warmth and grace.
The National Youth Orchestra of France is the ONL’s orchestra-in-residence.
