For its Concerts in the Country series, the ONL has devised a programme for string orchestra. The frenetic Romanian Folk Dances, reflecting a Bartók brimming with volcanic energy, will set the ball rolling, followed by Barber’s famous Adagio, an ode to melancholy, but hope too, which carries us to the peak of musical emotion. The airy, poetic, and colourful tones of Malcys’s Milky Way, a contemporary work, will provide a breath of fresh air before the intense commitment expressed in Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony, a work symbolising the composer’s fight against fascism.

A WORD FROM THE CONDUCTOR
Music has the power to rouse the deepest human emotions and encourage inner transformation. This programme’s capacity to move us is immense; and though each work contrasts starkly with the next, each resonates with the other.
