This programme takes us on an enthralling musical journey. The strength and rhythmic verve of Grażyna Bacewicz’s Overture for Orchestra is overpowering. Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.3 is an expansive voyage through fantastical ocean swells, crashing waves and the roller-coaster emotions of Romanticism. The fiendish solo part will be interpreted by the Czech pianist, Lukáš Vondráček. Zemlinsky’s seldom performed Little Mermaid will be conducted by Łukasz Borowicz, an enthralling revival which plunges us into the aquatic universe of Andersen’s fairy tale.

A WORD FROM THE CONDUCTOR
I’ve always been fascinated by rare or rarely performed music. Grażyna Bacewicz is a major 20th century composer in Poland. The Rachmaninov concerto is charged with overwhelming Slavic emotion. Lastly, Alexander von Zemlinsky transposes Andersen’s story of The Little Mermaid into music using a profusion of orchestral colours.
The Orchestre National de Lille, thanks to the support of its club of patrons, Arpège, is inviting students to the Auditorium to feel the emotional experience of this concert first-hand.
