Few works are as profoundly moving as Tchaikovsky’s sixth symphony, an overwhelming musical confession culminating in a vast tragic lament. The name Pathétique originates from the work’s first performance being held only a few weeks prior to Tchaikovsky’s death. Jean-Claude Casadesus will interpret this magnificent requiem alongside a beautiful programme of French music. In the overture to the Roi d’Ys, Lalo, a composer from Lille, depicts a mighty image of the Breton sea. The famed viola virtuoso, Nils Mönkemeyer, will then perform the Fantaisie-Concerto by Graciane Finzi, one of today’s most frequently played contemporary composers.
