Haydn’s First Cello Concerto was nearly lost forever. Though the work was known to have existed, it only resurfaced in 1961 when the manuscript was discovered in the archives of a Czech castle. This humorously imaginative treasure will be interpreted by the young cellist, Anastasia Kobekina. Prepare to be overwhelmed in the second half by the symphonic strength of Thus Spake Zarathustra, under the baton of the Chinese conductor, Xian Zhang. Popularised by Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, the breathtaking introductive fanfare was, for Strauss, the musical incarnation of “the dawn of humanity”. An outright masterpiece!
