Much speculation has gone into Schubert’s so-called Unfinished symphony. Having begun a vast four-part work in 1822, the composer only completed two exceptionally powerful and dramatic movements. In a little over five minutes, Webern pursued in his Variations for orchestra the dodecaphonic revolution, which he had begun with his Austrian compatriot, Alban Berg. The soprano, Chen Reiss, will interpret Berg’s expressionist Seven Early Songs before Gergely Madaras brings the concert to a close with Mozart’s Symphonie No.40, arguably the composer’s best-known symphonic work.

A WORD FROM THE CONDUCTOR
I wanted to bring to this programme a little of the Vienna I love most with works from the first and second Viennese Schools. Each is eternal and has made a huge contribution towards the development of classical music.
