Last season, the Orchestre National de Lille performed the world premieres of two remarkable works by Alex Nante: his Piano Concerto and the Sinfonía del cuerpo de luz, which was nominated for the Victoires de la Musique Classique. Bringing this season to a close, our Composer-in-residence has written Mysterium, an intensely devout work that highlights his preoccupation with the spiritual.

To perform this eagerly anticipated world premiere the orchestra will be joined by the Hauts-de-France Regional Choir. Mysterium is echoed in Mahler’s Symphony No.4, one of the composer’s most exquisitely beautiful yet curious works. Radiant and concise, it looks at the joys of childhood through melancholic eyes. This music, “which laughs and cries”, will be the led by the brilliant English conductor, Ben Glas.

A WORD FROM ALEX NANTE

Mysterium, for soprano, tenor, choir and symphony orchestra, takes its inspiration from the gnostic tradition. It is the last in a trilogy on the theme of light written for the Orchestre National de Lille. Using certain gnostic texts as a starting point, this latest work constructs a musical ritual around the evocation of light. It symbolises an attempt at complete immersion in the gnostic mysteries of light, which are filled with powerful images and symbols of everlasting wisdom.
